What independence actually means
Independence is a structural feature of the business, not a personality trait. An independent roof surveyor does not undertake the repair work their report may recommend. Their income does not depend on the client proceeding with repairs, so there is no commercial incentive to overstate defects or recommend work that is not necessary.
This is the core of what we offer across London. We inspect and report. We do not sell roofing repairs. The report is the product — not a bid for a contract.
Inspection versus a repair quotation
There is a meaningful difference between an inspection and a repair quotation, and it is worth being clear about it:
- An inspection diagnoses and reports on the condition of the roof. Its purpose is to inform the client.
- A repair quotation is an offer to carry out work. Its purpose is to win an appointment to do that work.
- When the same party both diagnoses and quotes, a potential conflict of interest exists regardless of the individual's integrity.
- An independent inspection removes that overlap, and with it the doubt.
The potential conflict of interest — explained fairly
This is not a claim that roofing contractors are dishonest. Many are skilled, honest professionals who do good work. The point is about incentives, not individuals. When the party that tells you your roof needs work is also the party hoping to be paid to do that work, a tension exists that is independent of anyone's character.
Some clients are comfortable with that arrangement. Others prefer an inspection from a provider who has no repair work to win — particularly when significant sums are involved, when a purchase is at stake, or when a previous recommendation is disputed. That is the gap we fill.
When an independent inspection is useful
- Property purchases, where a buyer wants an assessment not tied to repair work.
- Disputed recommendations, where a contractor has proposed extensive work and a second opinion is wanted.
- Large proposed roofing works, where the cost justifies an independent check before proceeding.
- Insurance matters, where an evidence-based report is needed to support a claim.
- Concerns about workmanship, where a neutral assessment of completed work is required.
Reviewing quotations
A common request is to review a quotation a client has already received. We assess whether the proposed work appears necessary, whether the scope seems reasonable, and whether the diagnosis behind it appears sound. We do not tell you whether to appoint a particular contractor — that is your decision — but we can help you understand whether the recommendation is justified.
What we do not do
